Brief Biography: Craig, James, brigadier-general, was born in Pennsylvania, May 7, 1820. he studied law and removed to St. Joseph, Mo., where he practiced his profession, and in 1847 was a member of the state legislature. He was captain of the Missouri mounted volunteers in the Mexican war from Aug. 1847, until Nov. 1848, and then returning to Missouri, was from 1852 to 1856 state attorney for the 12th judicial circuit. He served in Congress as a democrat from 1857 to 1861, and on March 21, 1862, was commissioned by President Lincoln, brigadier-general of volunteers. This office he held until May 5, 1863, serving in the west, then resigned and was an unsuccessful candidate for election to the 47th Congress. He was subsequently the first president of the Hannibal & St. Joseph railroad, and the first controller of St. Joseph. He died in St. Joseph, Mo., Oct. 21, 1888. (Source: The Union Army, Vol. VIII.
