Brief Biography: John Spence brought his family to Missouri in the late 1830s, traveling from Lexington, KY by boat and landing at St. Joseph, then called Robidoux's Landing. He homesteaded north of St. Joseph and became a large landowner and county judge in Andrew County. He established Spence's Mill on the 101 River near Castle (now Avenue City). From Find a Grave
